Surgical Orthodontics at Clayton Orthodontics
Orthognathic surgery can help to create a more symmetrical smile and significantly improve a patient's ability to breathe, chew, and speak.
Orthognathic surgery, also called orthodontic surgery or corrective jaw surgery, is performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to move the top or bottom jaw forward or back so that the teeth meet correctly.
While braces are effective for treating a wide range of tooth and bite misalignments, if orthodontic issues are stemming from the positioning of the jaws rather than the teeth, orthognathic surgery may also be necessary.
When performed in conjunction with orthodontic treatments, orthognathic surgery can provide patients with a smile that not only functions correctly, but looks great too.

Orthodontic Surgery Process
Surgical orthodontics is a collaborative process that can take multiple years to complete.
The process typically begins with your general dentist, who will work to ensure that your teeth, gums, and jaw are in the best condition possible. If your dentist believes you are suffering from significant misalignment of the teeth and jaws, they will refer you to Dr. Roth for orthodontic care, often in the form of braces.
After receiving braces from Dr. Roth, he may send you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for surgery that repositions your jaws so they are properly aligned. Your braces will remain on during and following the surgery. In the end, you'll be left with a smile that is more symmetrical.
Benefits of Surgical Orthodontics
Combining braces with vital corrective jaw surgery, orthodontic surgery is designed to properly align the upper and lower jaws.
These treatments can address a range of orthodontic and general health issues including TMJ disorders, traumatic injuries, improper jaw development, or even obstructive sleep apnea.
For patients with these conditions, surgical orthodontics can help relieve symptoms such as chronic headaches, and also improve their ability to breathe freely, and allow for proper chewing and speech.
